GOALS
COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE
We knew that our marriage was on the line as well as our financial freedom. Mickey and Minnie were not raised the same way and view money differently. Communication is key to freedom as well as your marriage. Discuss every purchase. Minnie spent so much time just doing the finances that she struggled including Mickey in conversations. No buying anything without agreeing. Wow this cause a lot of talking and discussing. But we learned it was a great way to save money. If Minnie had to talk to Mickey first she found she forgot or didn't need it. Talking also helps with deciding if it is a need or a want.
1. Save a $1,000
Minnie started reading Dave Ramsey's Total Money Make Over. His first suggestion was to save a $1000 for emergencies. How could we do that we were already struggling? We had $200 in savings and $800 more seemed impossible. But we could see the reason behind it, have money when things come up, like a broke washer. But, it's hard not to just pay that money on bills. But looking at our bills, the balances were high enough that wouldn't help anything. Plus, it actually feels good to know that there is $200 just in case. Keep in mind "just in case" is not a vacation.
2. Stop spending money if it's not a need.
Stop spending money if it's not a need.
While this sounded so easy it was tough. Minnie was trying to do a no spend 30 days but didn't bother to tell Mickey. That doesn't mean spend nothing just spend only on needs. These include gas, milk, eggs, produce.
Minnie knew it would be tough. This would also help us achieve Goal #1. This month they had many family member coming to visit. How can we feed our family without shopping and only used what's in our cupboards and freezer?
